How the diagrams are verified

The site's 14 positions are checked by program before every publication:

• pieces only on dark squares, one per square, at most 12 per side, no man on its promotion row;
• legal moves calculated by the rules engine of the Dames app, the one that referees your games;
• the same moves recalculated by a second, separately written program that applies the rules described on the Rules page;
• each exercise's answer compared with the full list of legal moves, including captured pieces and promotion;
• figures on the pages (squares, men, opening moves, thinking time) re-read at their source.

The tips on the Learn page are playing advice: they depend on the position and are presented as such. Spotted a mistake? Write to us via the contact page.
